Could a Child's Health Story Begin Before Birth?

Most parents seek help because of what they see today—eczema, repeated coughs, asthma, anxiety, poor sleep, digestive problems.

But sometimes, the clues to these symptoms begin long before birth.

I had a case of a young child with eczema, frequent coughs that often developed into bronchitis, and a noticeable level of fear. The symptoms had been treated many times, yet the overall pattern remained.

During the consultation, I asked the mother about her pregnancy.

She didn’t recall this but after few consultations she remembered something important.

Contractions had started from the fifth month of pregnancy.

That one detail completely changed how I understood the case.

Why Pregnancy History Matters

Many practitioners focus on the birth itself.

But a baby's story begins much earlier.

Throughout pregnancy, the baby is constantly responding to the environment in the womb. Although the baby is physically small, its sensitivity is immense. Every change in the mother's body can be perceived by the developing baby, and sometimes the baby's response can even influence the mother in return.

Every physical change...Every emotional experience...Every challenge during pregnancy...

becomes part of the baby's earliest experience.

This is why pregnancy history is such an important part of case-taking. It can reveal valuable clues that might otherwise be overlooked and help us understand the roots of symptoms long before birth.

Looking Through the GNM Perspective

In German New Medicine (GNM), bronchitis is often associated with a fear of death conflict.

This raises an interesting question.

How can a young child, who has lovely childhood, has never experienced an obvious life-threatening event, develop such a deep pattern?

One possibility is that the experience began before birth.

In this case, the mother recalled having repeated contractions from the fifth month of pregnancy. From a GNM perspective, the unborn baby may experience these contractions as a threat to survival, even though the mother herself may not consciously experience fear. If this is the baby's earliest perception of danger, it may leave an imprint that later appears as recurring patterns of fear alongside respiratory symptoms such as bronchitis.

Whether or not one adopts this perspective, it highlights the importance of asking about pregnancy history during case-taking. Sometimes the missing piece of the puzzle may not begin after birth. It may begin in the womb.

Pregnancy Is the Body Communicating

Pregnancy symptoms are not always random.

The body is constantly adapting, protecting and communicating.

Supporting the mother early may not only improve her wellbeing, but may also influence the environment in which the baby develops.

These two sessions explored practical clinical approaches to supporting mothers through pregnancy, labour and the early months after birth.

It was a reminder that good care begins long before birth.

Healthy mothers often provide the healthiest beginning for their babies.

Final Thoughts

Every pregnancy has its own story.

Sometimes the answers we are searching for are not found in the child's current symptoms alone, but in the journey that began before they were born.

Taking time to explore pregnancy history may offer insights that change the way we understand a case—and perhaps the way we support both mother and child.
